Another excellent example of why I plan to play video games as I get older.
"Can playing the computer game "Tetris" reduce the build-up of Flashbacks for Trauma?"
I could spend days, weeks... or months reading all the articles here. Its really great reading and a great site for all. It does really make me wonder about the physiology of it all...
Enjoy.

Growing up in the technoligical age, it is always been rumored that playing video games enhances our hand and eye coordination. But with the introduction of interactive games and online gaming, there is a social dynamic to it as well. For example, Warcraft began as a game for one, and now the entire world plays the game creating a new community. The learning opportunities are endless.
And now with the advent of the Wii gaming system, the video game world has finally intermixed with the fitness world. The games for the Wii engourage team play, body movement, and fitness of the mind and body.
The research in this article proposed an interesting solution for those who are unable to communicate - the suggestion that playing Tetris (or another video game, I assume) could help reduce flashbacks of PTSD victims leads me to wonder: if this actually prevented the memory of the trauma from being remembered, would it also prevent the memory of other things, such as learning math skills, spelling, grammar, history, etc. Do you see where I'm going with this? Doesn't the result of this research also indicate that too much time spent playing video games is damaging to memory in general?
How did someone ever even think of this? I've seen how PTSD can literally ruin people's lives who suffer from this. It brings hardship to them and their families, and can leave them pretty much unfunctional if not treated early. BUT TETRIS???? How awesome is that?
The fact this is a non invasive way to treat such a serious disorder is fantastic. It will be interesting to see what else video games will be able to "heal."
This seems to interrupt memory and the process the brain uses to move "things" from short term to long term memory. I wonder if there is a relationship between games such as TETRIS and the scrubbing of "good thoughts"? Curious ...
This is a very interesting article. How a video game such as tetris can be considered a type of medicine for those with PTSD. However, playing such video games doesn't that damage the brain within time?
This is a great article that I thought I would ever be able to read with such a pro towards video games. Who knew that one of the biggest things that so many people have abd stigma about turns out to be a great medicine for PTSD. I hope that Tetris gets put to more good use and more research can be put on for similar video games and scenarios to continue helping mental health disorders such as PTSD.
Great question Alma. I wonder if any research has been done for this. What I have read is that playing video games improves hand and eye coordination. I think like all things, it is important to do things in moderation.
Very Interesting article on how Tetris can help people with PTSD. I would be a little wary with having patients play Call of Duty or similar games with violence. I wonder what other type of games would help with PTSD, perhaps Pac-Man/Woman. Also something to consider- Does Tetris help Vietnam Veterans with PTHS versus Golf War Veterans?
